DuPage County Forest Preserve District Referendum
The Forest Preserve District has the responsibility of acquiring, preserving, protecting and restoring the green spaces, waterways and wildlife for the enjoyment and benefit of the residents of DuPage County. In 2006, the tax levy that funded the Forest Preserve District was $2.30 per $100 of assessed value of a home. Since then, the district has lowered the rate to $1.50 per $100 of assessed value, while also adding 30 miles of trails, 639 acres of land, and restoring 8,500 acres to a more pristine state. The installation of solar panels on its major buildings has saved the county $50,000 a year in electric bills, and 95% of its fleet of 170 vehicles are powered by alternative fuels such as liquified gas, ethanol, biodiesel fuel, or are hybrids.
The Forest Preserve District is now requesting an increase in the property tax rate from $1.50 per $100 of ‘assessed’ valuation to $1.90. The expected impact of this increase on your property tax bills is shown below.
*Note, as shown on your property tax bill, the assessed value of a home is much less than its market value.
The proposed increase in the tax rate includes the funding of the following important efforts:
Increased protection of watersheds to improve the water quality of rivers, lakes and streams to protect drinking water sources
Improvement of air quality by planting trees
Increased preservation and restoration of wildlife habitat
Increased support for public safety and Forest Preserve Police Initiatives
The preservation of more than 250 acres of new land
